Suffolk is predominately a low lying and open area containing a diversity of landscapes which support intensive arable farming and horticulture, the region is the least hilly area of Britain, with little land too steep to be cultivated.
The geology, climate, relief and rainfall form the basis of the region’s high quality agricultural land which is capable of growing the widest range of agricultural and non-agricultural crops in the UK. Suffolk and its surrounds comprise a general solid geology distribution of sandstone in the east, chalk and limestone in central areas and clay rocks in the south and west. Major aquifers are located within the sand, chalk and limestone permeable rocks. This groundwater is important for domestic, industrial and agricultural use and aquifers provide nearly half of the region’s total water supply.
Suffolk and East Anglia are influenced by their proximity to the continent. They experience warm summers and mild winters with a long growing season. The favourable temperatures exist due to the low relief so that the region is the driest part of the country with an average annual rainfall which is only two thirds of the national average (836mm).
